What is a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)? Open

A PHEV is a combination of rechargeable battery, petrol combustion engine, and an electric motor.

Unlike typical Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), a PHEV can be driven for even longer on electric power alone, so it’s particularly great for drivers who can charge regularly. A PHEV offers the benefits of an EV for daily use, with the added flexibility of a petrol engine for longer trips. It’s important to note that fuel economy benefits are recorded in laboratory conditions, and are not reflective of real-world driving conditions.

What are the differences between Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)? Open

BEVs run solely on their lithium-ion electric battery, and rely on being charged regularly via AC or DC charging. A BEV can also regenerate a portion of their battery charge via regenerative braking, which converts kinetic energy generated through natural use of the brakes back into electrical energy, returning it to the battery.

HEVs and PHEVs use similar systems to each other – they both combine a combustion petrol engine with an electric motor and battery. Both also have the ability to change effortlessly over to electric-only driving modes, and like BEVs, are able to utilise regenerative braking when necessary.

The difference is that a PHEV’s powertrain offers typically better performance than HEV counterparts of the same model, the option to drive solely using just the electric motor for longer, and the opportunity to charge it manually at a public charging station, or at home.

How does a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) know when to switch between electric vehicle (EV) mode or Hybrid Electric modes? Open

By default, a PHEV starts in EV mode and switches to Hybrid Electric mode when the battery is low, but drivers can manually select Hybrid Electric mode any given time using the AUTO/EV/HV button. For example, you may want to switch manually from EV to HEV mode to save battery for city driving when you have a long freeway trip ahead of you.

Note: the petrol engine may still activate in EV mode during heavy acceleration, steep climbs or certain battery conditions.

How far can Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) drive on just electricity? Open

The range of a PHEV varies by model, driving conditions and weather, but most current PHEVs offer 50–80km of real-world electric-only driving. The All-New RAV4 PHEV targets a WLTP range of 100km*. It should be noted that fuel economy benefits are recorded in laboratory conditions, and are not reflective of real-world driving conditions.

Can I run a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) on just EV mode with no petrol in the tank? Open

No, a PHEV’s system requires fuel in the vehicle to operate correctly, and if there isn’t any petrol in the tank the vehicle won’t start.

    At home, you can use a Mode 2 (3-pin) portable charging cable with any standard power outlet to top up the battery. For faster, more convenient charging, you can install a dedicated AC wall charger (Mode 3).

    In public, the RAV4 PHEV supports both AC and DC charging. Use the provided Mode 3 cable for AC public chargers, or a Mode 4 tethered cable at DC fast-charging stations. Most public chargers require you to download and register with the provider’s app before use.

Charging FAQs

What is the difference between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) charging? Open

AC charging typically comes out of a wall socket (like the ones in your home), and provides a lower voltage, which doesn’t charge as fast as DC charging. AC charging is suitable for longer periods of time spent charging, such as overnight at home.

DC charging typically comes from industrial or public power sources, such as EV charging stations, and provides a higher voltage meaning faster charging for EV batteries. DC charging is suitable only for shorter charging periods, like when you’re on longer trips and need to charge your battery faster.

Note: Charging from a DC charger for an extended period of more than an hour may be detrimental to your PHEV’s battery life. The owner's manual specific to the PHEV model has information on charging time recommendations.

Do I have to charge a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)? Open

No, charging isn’t mandatory but it helps reduce fuel usage. Without charging, the car runs in Hybrid Electric mode and uses more petrol due to the heavier battery. Charging regularly, ideally at home, maximises the fuel savings and benefits of a PHEV.

Additionally, if a PHEV’s battery charge happens to be very low, it will automatically swap over to regular HEV mode, and use some of the power from the petrol engine and try to charge the EV battery. Not completely, but enough to keep things running smoothly until you get the opportunity to charge it via an AC or DC charger.

How long does it take to charge a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)? Open

From near-empty, charging a PHEV takes about 9–10 hours with a standard outlet (Mode 2) or 3–4 hours with a Mode 3 charger*.

Can I charge a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) at a public charging station? Open

It depends on the vehicle and the type of public charger. All PHEVs in Australia support AC charging with a Mode 3 cable, and some, like the RAV4 PHEV, also support DC fast charging with a Mode 4 cable. Most public chargers require you to register via the provider’s app before use.
